Rare CreaturesSunglasses at Night is made by Rare Creatures LLC ("we", "us"). This policy covers the Sunglasses at Night app and its Safari extension on iPhone, iPad and Mac, wherever in the world you use them.
The short version
- Sunglasses at Night changes how websites look, on your device. It never sends the pages you visit, their addresses, or your settings to us or to anyone else.
- It has no account, no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting, no tracking and no purchases.
- Your settings and per-site choices are stored on your device. You can delete them at any time.
- We only receive something if you choose to email us, for example with Report a problem.
What stays on your device
Sunglasses at Night stores the following on your device, in Safari's extension storage and in storage shared between the app and its Safari extension (an App Group on your device). None of it is uploaded.
- Your settings: when dark mode turns on (match system, always, on a schedule, or off), the schedule times, the look sliders (brightness, contrast, sepia, grayscale), image options, whether to leave already-dark pages alone, and which engine to use.
- Per-site choices: if you choose Always dark or Never dark for a website, or give it its own look or engine, the website's hostname (for example
example.com) and your choice. - A copy of your settings for the app: so the app can show your settings and carry out Reset all settings, the extension keeps a copy of your settings, including those hostnames, in the storage it shares with the app. It is replaced whenever your settings change and never leaves your device.
These stay until you change them, delete them, reset them or uninstall the app.
Access to websites
To change how pages look, the Safari extension needs permission to run on the websites you visit. While a page is open, it reads the page's styles and address in memory, to work out darker colors and to look up your choice for that site. This happens only on your device. Page content and addresses are not stored, apart from a hostname when you make a choice for that site, and are never sent anywhere. Safari lets you limit the extension to the sites you choose, in Safari's settings.
Loading a page's own stylesheets
Safari does not let an extension read some stylesheets that a page loads from another server. For those, the extension asks for the same stylesheet again, from the same address the page already used. That request goes to the website's own server, never to us or to anyone else. It carries no cookies and no referrer, is usually answered from Safari's cache, and contains only that stylesheet's address. The stylesheet text is held in memory while it is needed and is not saved.
Reporting a problem
Report a problem opens a draft email in your own Mail app, addressed to [email protected]. The draft contains the hostname of the site you are on, the extension's version, your browser's user-agent string (which names your Safari and system version), and your current settings. For per-site choices it includes only the current site's choice and the number of other sites you have set, never their names.
Nothing is sent unless you press Send in Mail, and you can edit or delete anything in the draft first. If you send it, we receive your email address and what the email contains. We use it only to look into the problem and reply to you. Ask us at any time to delete your email, and we will.
What we receive
Nothing, unless you email us. There is no Sunglasses at Night server. We cannot see the sites you visit, your settings, or whether you use the app. It contains no analytics, no crash reporting and no advertising, uses no advertising identifier, location or iCloud sync, and sets no cookies. The App Store may give us aggregate download and rating figures, which do not identify you.
Who is responsible for your data
Rare Creatures LLC makes Sunglasses at Night. The app keeps your data on your device, under your control, and we do not receive it. For emails you choose to send us, Rare Creatures LLC is responsible for them. Apple is responsible for Safari and the App Store under its own policies.
Legal bases
Where data protection laws such as the GDPR or UK GDPR apply: the app handles data on your device only to provide the features you use. If you email us, we use what you send on the basis of our legitimate interest in answering you and fixing problems, and, where you ask for help, to respond to your request.
International transfers
The app transfers nothing, because nothing leaves your device. If you email us, your email is handled by our email provider and may be processed in the United States or other countries, with the safeguards that provider uses.
How long data is kept
On your device: until you change or delete it, reset all settings, or uninstall the app. Emails you send us: we do not delete them automatically. They stay in our mailbox until we delete them, and we delete yours whenever you ask.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to or take a copy of your personal data, to withdraw consent, and not to be discriminated against for using these rights. Data on your device is yours to change or delete with the controls below. For emails you sent us, write to the address under Contact and we will answer within 30 days. If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you may also complain to your local data protection authority.
United States
We do not sell or share personal information, use it for targeted advertising, or use it to profile you, as those terms are defined under California and other US state privacy laws. We do not collect sensitive personal information.
Children
The app collects no personal information from anyone, including children. We do not knowingly receive personal information from children. If a child has emailed us and a parent or guardian wants that email deleted, write to us and we will delete it.
Security
Your settings stay in storage on your device that websites cannot read. The extension never sends page content or settings over the network. No system is perfectly secure, and you are responsible for keeping your device secure.
Websites we don't control
Sunglasses at Night changes how other people's websites look on your screen. We do not own or control those websites and are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices.
Your controls
- Delete any single site's choice in the Sites list.
- Reset all settings in the app or the extension, which erases your settings and every site choice, in the extension and in the app.
- Limit which websites the extension can run on, in Safari's settings.
- Uninstall the app to remove everything it stores.
Changes
We may update this policy. If it changes, the date at the top changes with it, and we describe the change in the app's release notes. If the app ever needs to send data off your device, this policy will say so first.
