NightCast for iPhone is made by Rare Creatures LLC.
What NightCast stores, and where
Everything NightCast remembers is stored on your iPhone, in the app's own storage. It is included in your device backups, and it is deleted when you delete the app. It is:
- The podcasts you subscribe to, and the order you put them in.
- How far through each episode you are, so playback picks up where you left off.
- Episode lists and feed data, cached so the app opens quickly.
- Artwork images, cached so they do not have to be fetched again.
- Your settings: the theme, the Library layout, and your Explore interests.
There is no account to sign in to, so there is nowhere for us to keep any of it even if we wanted to.
When NightCast uses the network
It is a podcast player, so it has to fetch podcasts. It contacts three kinds of place, and nothing else.
Apple's iTunes Search API
When you search for a show, when Explore loads charts or categories, and when the app looks up a show's details, NightCast asks itunes.apple.com. Your search terms and the categories you browse go to Apple as part of those requests, and Apple handles them under Apple's own privacy policy. We never see them. Show artwork loads from Apple's artwork servers at is1-ssl.mzstatic.com.
Podcast publishers
Whatever server a show's RSS feed and audio files live on, to download the episode list and to stream the audio. Which servers those are depends entirely on which shows you subscribe to. Those publishers can see what any podcast app or web browser would show them: that a request was made, from an IP address, at a time. We have no relationship with them and no access to their logs.
Nothing else
There is no Rare Creatures server involved at any point. The app contains no analytics SDK, no crash-reporting SDK and no advertising SDK.
What we receive
Nothing. We cannot see your subscriptions, your searches, your listening history, or whether you use the app at all.
Apple may give us anonymous, aggregated figures through App Store Connect: how many people downloaded the app, and aggregated crash reports if you have chosen to share those with developers in your iPhone's settings. That is Apple's system, it is aggregated, and it does not identify you.
Audio, and the Sleep timer
The Sleep fade changes the volume inside NightCast only. It never touches your device volume and never affects another app's audio.
Sleep is never saved to disk, so it cannot switch itself back on after you relaunch the app.
NightCast asks iOS for background audio so playback carries on when your screen is locked, and it uses the system Now Playing controls so the Lock Screen, Control Center and your headphones can control it. None of that sends anything anywhere.
Children
NightCast is not directed at children and knowingly collects nothing from anyone. There is no sign-up, so we have no way to know anyone's age. Podcasts found through Apple's public directory may contain explicit content, which Apple marks in its listings.
Your controls
- Unsubscribe from a show to remove it and its episode data.
- Delete the app to erase everything NightCast has stored.
- There is no account to close, and no data of yours for us to delete, because we hold none.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
